You have seen them many times. They wear crow wigs color long hair, their skin is pale, like paper, their make up is gloomy and hard, their eyes are sad and haggard. They can be guys or girls, sometimes people mistake them for tramp actors, and sometimes people count them as Satanists. But they aren’t. Their name is as simple as cry, they are Goths.
First Goths sprang up more than 20 years ago at the last punk wave. They had huge hairstyles, torn jeans and absolutely new view point to the life. New punks listened to depressive music, aspired to contrast themselves to society and fought for personal individuality. There style changed simultaneously with their new philosophy. Their clothes had become absolutely black as protest against bright colors of pop world, their music immersed into deep depression and mysterious aura had got stronger by musical elements.
First gothic collectives used only aesthetic of new movement and played absolutely different music, but several years later gothic had become independent movement. Gothic-rock musicians had same aim: playing hard and sad guitar reefs, depressive lyric poems and having gloomy view with bright make up. The time passed and gothic music limits was washed away. Today gothic musicians are similar in their view and lyric poems, but music is very different. Some groups play almost only electronic music and other often use instrumental sounds.
Everyone can be Goth, if you take a good look. If you are reclusive and you often fall into depression, you are always accompanied by melancholy and you soul is very vulnerable, you are nearly Goth. And Goths are very strange people. They perceive reality in a particular way and combine refined sense of beauty with love to mysticism and super natural phenomenons. As a whole they have some “dark” perception of everything.
Cinema and literature play a special role in gothic culture. The most popular films among Goths are horror films about Nosferat and Graf Dracula. Goths’ cult picture is “Crow” film, there Brandon Lee played the main role and the music was played by “The Cure” band — one of the leaders of gothic movement. Vampire theme predominates in literature. Admires of this genre are engrossed in Ann Rice’s works. “Interview with vampire” is her most famous novel, which even had become a film, where Hollywood stars Tom Kruse and Bred Pete played the main roles.
